A backyard is something to take care of. Find pride in. A moment of feeling like we are connected to something larger than ourselves.

What has thousands of birds, purifies water and flows towards 15 million people?

The Columbia Wetland, part of Kicking Horse® Coffee’s backyard

What's up with the backyard?

Hullo! Welcome to the first edition of Full Press, Kicking Horse® Coffee's journal of stories that matter to us.

Coffee is obviously a big part of our story. But there are other stories we care about too. There are all kinds of stories about perceptions, attitudes, places, imaginations, and wanderings that inspire us to wake up and kick ass. If we're stoked about some of them, then you might be too. We think good stories, like good coffee, are best shared.

Anyways, back to the backyard. Here's why our first issue is themed about what lies out the back door.

There's some legend or myth or coffee shop rumour that's been circulated about National Geographic photographers and backyards. Apparently, in order to be a NatGeo photographer, one first had to demonstrate the ability to share inspiration from their own backyard. Point being, if they couldn't demonstrate the creativity necessary to find magic in the familiar, then you had no business telling the stories of other people's backyard.

The stories, ramblings and observances in this first issue are connected close to home for us. It's a good place to start. The future of Full Press will be further and more, but for now, these are just some of the folks and things that make us sing.

Finally, about where we live. To us at Kicking Horse® Coffee, our backyard is a big reason why we are where we are. C'mon! Of all the places in the world to select to import, roast, and distribute coffee, you'd be hard pressed to find a more ridiculous decision than to settle down smack dab in the middle of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. And yet, here we are. It's an area that inspires us. That promises purity. That's home to good folks and small adventures, and puts up with big ideas.

A backyard this awesome has meant compromises. But it's also meant the promise of adventure. There's something about waking up in the Rocky Mountains with a good cup of coffee that inspires us to kick ass. Here's to stories and places that inspire you to do the same!
